“Most people today have college degrees, so that no longer sets you apart, but having an APICS certification proves that you have the knowledge and resources to achieve your goals.”

Why did you decide to pursue the APICS CPIM certification?

I was encouraged by my manager to pursue APICS certification.  She explained to me how it enhanced her career and suggested that I consider certification to boost my career.  At the time, I was debating which would be more impactful to my career, a college degree or APICS certification.  In the end, I decide that both were necessary and would complement each other and therefore I decided to pursue them simultaneously.

How did you prepare for the APICS CPIM exam?

I ordered all the suggested reading material and the practice exams.  The practice exams were great, as they provide the references for all practice questions, so I could focus on the specific areas that I needed more help.

What was your biggest takeaway from APICS CPIM training?

As a scheduler, I understood the details of what I was scheduling, but through the APICS training I was exposed to the much bigger picture of the supply chain to better understand the upstream and downstream relationships.  By realizing the interconnectivity of the supplier to the factory to the customer, I am better able to identify opportunities for improvement.

How has an APICS certification impacted your career or organization?

My APICS certification, and more importantly the training that I received, has helped me to develop improved material planning processes and capacity planning processes, which has led to inventory and cycle time reductions improving our bottom line.

Have you implemented a supply chain or logistics initiative at your organization as a result of your APICS certification training?

I have implemented supplier Kanban’s with several of our key suppliers, helping to reduce cycle times and lower inventory.  Often, our suppliers would ask for large PO's and would deliver monthly on these PO's, creating lumps in the supply chain.  By utilizing the Kanban’s, we have suppliers delivering weekly in a more consistent quantity.  Now they no longer request the large PO's, since we have smoothed the demand and they simply replenish the materials that were consumed the prior week.

What are other benefits of APICS certification?

Having APICS certification helps you stand out among your peers.  Most people today have college degrees, so that no longer sets you apart, but having an APICS certification proves that you have the knowledge and resources to achieve your goals.
