New Intel Chief Gearing Up for Mobile Computing

by APICS Staff | N/A 2012 | 0 | 0
Brian Krzanich, Intel's new chief operating officer, says he is fine-tuning Intel's supply chain to meet anticipated demand for smartphones and tablet computers, Reuters reports. Krzanich, who comes from a manufacturing background, is poised to one day become chief executive officer. He says his focus is to shorten factory lead times, which he says is a key driver of performance in today's competitive mobile computing marketplace.

Intel has fallen behind in the mobile industry, as many popular mobile devices, such as Apple's iPad, are based on technology from rival ARM Holdings. But Intel's new Medfield chip will be used in a couple of upcoming smartphones from Lenovo, Motorola, and other manufacturers, which has made Wall Street optimistic about the microchip manufacturer.

One of Krzanich's initiatives has been increasing Intel's production rates. He says in the past five years, he has cut in half the time it takes to manufacture a component and order lead times. Also, he has shortened the time for Intel to build and open a new plant. "What have I brought to manufacturing? Speed and agility," Krzanich says.

Morocco to Enhance Supply Chain and Logistics Capabilities

Moroccan leaders plan to create about 70 logistics hubs in 18 cities by 2020 as part of a long-term plan to enhance the North African country's supply chain, IFW-net reports. Officials will create a national logistics agency to coordinate the efforts, which are part of an agreement between Morocco's government and the independent Confederation of Moroccan Industry.

In addition, the supply chain and logistics effort comes with a focus on optimizing Morocco's traffic flows, increasing logistics training courses, and improving governance and regulation of the logistics sector. "The plan is very ambitious," says Cédric Guez, development manager at GSE, a logistics property developer in Morocco. "But Morocco has sent out a very clear message that it is seeking to structure its logistics and aspires to attaining European standards in the sector."

One early logistics hub to be created is near Mohammedia, a port city about 15 miles from Casablanca. Eventually, an approximately one million square-foot complex will be constructed there.

India Licenses Generic Manufacture of Name-Brand Cancer Drug

India has effectively ended pharmaceutical giant Bayer's exclusive rights to manufacture the cancer drug Nexavar by issuing a first-ever compulsory license to a local generic drug maker, Reuters reports. The move is only the second instance of compulsory licensing by a country, following Thailand on four drugs in 2006 and 2008. In both India and Thailand, the licenses were granted to increase affordability.

"This could well be the first of many compulsory rulings here," says Gopakumar G. Nair, former president of the Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association. "Global pharmaceutical manufacturers are likely to be worried as a result." He adds that India's law regarding patents has recently been modified, changing the phrase "reasonably priced" to "reasonably affordable priced," a likely impetus for the licensing.

Global pharmaceutical manufacturers view emerging markets such as India as key growth areas, but they are concerned about intellectual property issues. Nair says that HIV drugs are the most likely candidates for future compulsory licenses by India's government; India has one of the fastest-growing HIV rates in the world.
