Using APICS resources for speedy success

Since starting out in the field of logistics at the age of 18, Nicholas Santini—now director of logistics at European fashion retailer and manufacturer Carlo Pazolini USA—attributes much of his success to his APICS affiliation. “I am only 29, and I have been lucky enough to be able to advance my career pretty rapidly,” he explains. “I can’t say enough [about] how APICS has given me a leg up on the competition by simply using the resources that it makes available to me.”

Santini says he always aims to learn as much as possible about the best ways to accomplish day-to-day operations. APICS membership first came into play in this regard when he was finishing his last year in college. He remembers that, even back then, he knew the importance of tapping into an organization that would give him the tools to succeed and an opportunity to be a part of an association that takes pride in helping its members operate at the highest level.

“I’m so proud to be an APICS member … Without APICS, I would not be as motivated as I am,” Santini says, adding that he recently was approved to take the APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) exam. He has been eagerly working through the study program and looks forward to earning his designation this summer.

In his current role at Carlo Pazolini, Santini has numerous responsibilities. He handles the tracking, shipping, cost, and delivery of footwear and accessories to the US market; manages relationships in order to enhance product development, cost, and delivery flow; calculates and verifies duty rates by product item to ensure accuracy and provide pricing strategy information to merchant teams; works with a third-party broker to ensure that products get through customs in a timely manner; identifies the best methods of shipping; and oversees inventory and loss prevention controls. He says his APICS education has given him the tools he needs to understand and excel at all of these tasks.

Making the most of membership

Santini believes that one of the greatest rewards of being an APICS member is having access to so much valuable industry information through the APICS body of knowledge. “I can’t tell you the number of times I have gone onto the APICS website and clicked through to the supply chain links or the CSCP and [Certified in Production and Inventory Management] links to find out what I can do to enhance my career,” he says. “Throughout my journey in supply chain and logistics, I can say without a doubt that APICS has made me smarter and helped create the passion that
I am thankful to have today.”

In addition to the tools offered on the APICS website, Santini also enjoys APICS magazine and says that reading the publication has opened his eyes to new possibilities within the industry. “I can’t wait to get more involved,” he says. “I really cannot think of a better way to enhance my knowledge.”
