Chicago, Ill. (December 6, 2010)—APICS The Association for Operations Management, the global leader in supply chain and operations management certification, education, and membership, announced today the release of the APICS Materials Manager Competency Model—a model designed to guide individuals considering careers in materials management, materials management professionals seeking to advance their positions, and human resource managers who are hiring in this field.
Materials managers support the complete cycle of material flow—from the purchase and control of materials to the planning and control of work in process and the finished product. In short, these professionals ensure that an organization's available goods can satisfy the demands of customers. Organizations depend on effective materials managers to minimize waste, manage inventory levels, and ensure that output is in line with the company’s balance sheet.
“Organizations recognize that qualified materials managers can help them reduce costs, manage work flows, and balance inventory with demand,” said Robert Vokurka, Ph. D., CFPIM, CIRM, CSCP, C.P.M., chair of the model development team. “Employing highly skilled materials management professionals helps make companies more profitable and enables the long-term success of enterprises.”
“We are pleased to offer the APICS Materials Manager Competency Model as a tool for materials management field,” said APICS chief executive officer Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “The competency model provides the profession with a clear picture of what knowledge and skills are required of a qualified materials manager.”
The model structure follows U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration guidelines. The APICS Materials Manager Competency Model can be found at www.apics.org/careers.
