Why did you pursue your certification?
Seven years ago, I started my first job in operations working as a production planner for a smaller company in the pacific northwest. After being in the position for about 18 months I had an opportunity to become the production control manager. One of the requirements was the CPIM certification. I was given the position contingent on my completion of the certification.
I started studying and completed the program in about 5-6 months.
How did you prepare for your APICS certification?
I did the Fox Valley Tech program for the first module. The remaining modules I just did the self-study guides and practice tests that APICS offers.
What was your biggest takeaway from your APICS training?
For me, the greatest thing I got from the training was the capacity management and inventory management material. At the time, this was very relevant to what I was managing and, these areas are something that I've had to develop in a couple of organizations I've worked for. APICS helped set a nice foundation for that.
How has an APICS certification impacted your career or organization?
The certification has changed my career greatly! The nice thing about working towards the certification while in the workforce is that it allows you to apply what you're learning as you go. You'll be studying and a light bulb will come on. Then the next day you're at work trying to see if we can apply it to the organization's operations. I've made many improvements at the organizations that I have worked for because of my APICS training, and because of that, my career trajectory has been very steep. I am 31 years old, and in the last 7 years I have gone from Production Planner to VP of Supply Chain.
Have you implemented a supply chain or logistics initiative at your organization as a result of your APICS certification training?
Yes. At my previous company it was an inventory management system/process, and in my current organization it was a capacity planning system/process.
What are other benefits of APICS certification?
The network is great. I've had the opportunity to attend multiple seminars and conferences that APICS offers, and I think that just being a part of the organization is great, let alone having the certification. The CPIM has helped my career tremendously, and more and more companies are requiring it. I have no doubt that I will continue to gain from it.
