Why did you decide to pursue the CLTD certification?
Our Vice President, Gary Smith, sent out a notice regarding a certification class that would enable a better understanding of Logistics, Transportation and Distribution. I reviewed some sample literature and questions on the subject matter, and I was interested to learn more.
These are the reasons why I pursued CLTD and I am happy that I did.
How did you prepare for your APICS certification?
I chose to attend a 13-session classroom setting of 3 hours each week, during the summer, after work from 4 pm -7 pm, with a certified APICS instructor. We were provided with study materials, access to on line reading material and quizzes\tests. I took it upon myself to read further into topics from major news sources such as the Wall Street Journal. For example, when we were discussing pipelines under Transportation, I could gather data and articles on current events regarding pipelines and apply the knowledge in the classroom to current events. I also did this with other topics such as warehouse and distribution, and found articles about Amazon and how they were using warehousing and distribution techniques, strategies and operational skills.
What was your biggest takeaway from the CLTD training?
It was a tremendous amount of information on Logistics, Transportation and Distribution. While I am in the industry, there was so much more to learn and discuss in the classroom setting. I am certainly more confident now after taking this class in the above topics and can certainly discuss them with my peers and co-workers. The class had eight major topics, and although all did not apply to my current responsibilities, it was interesting to learn about those areas and now I have a much boarder understanding of them as well.
How has an APICS certification impacted your career or organization?
I was recently promoted to Director of Supply Chain Management Systems and this certification with its wealth of information certainly helped in my quest to better understand Logistics, Transportation and Distribution. In addition, Supply Chain Management which has become the industry buzz phrase, can be seen throughout this certification class and can be broken down into each level of understanding and visibility.
Have you implemented a logistics, transportation and distribution initiative because of your APICS CLTD training?
We have several employees who attended this class and passed the certification test and others who have also taken other APICS certification classes including CSCP. In addition, I and several other members of the organization just completed the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. Our Vice President is very active in ensuring that these certifications are offered to employees, as well as holding general supply chain classes.
What are other benefits of APICS certification?
With this certification, you are immediately recognized as a member in good standing in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Community and you are viewed by and respected as a professional in the industry. They understand the time, work and effort that one exerts when striving toward and achieving a goal…and the CLTD certification is certainly worth the journey.
