Principles and Practices of MRP for the Manufacturing Planner

This APICS Principles seminar, presented in collaboration with the APICS chapters in the Canadian District, is designed to assist beginning as well as experienced planners using a materials requirements planning (MRP) system to acquire a firm understanding of the principles and functions of MRP. 

The seminar begins with a definition of planning in the manufacturing environment and then proceeds to a full discussion of MRP basics, MRP logic, and daily management with MRP. The seminar includes an in-depth review of the role and activities performed by the MRP planner. Performance measurements used to determine the effectiveness of the MRP in priority management are also discussed. The seminar concludes with the finalization of the MRP plan that supports the inventory objectives of the tactical and strategic plans of the business.

Seminar objectives
Through classroom discussion and practical, hands-on exercises the seminar provides today’s manufacturing planner with answers to several key questions:

  • What is the role of MRP in the manufacturing process?
  • What are the objectives and functions of MRP?
  • What are the outputs of the MRP calculation?
  • How does the MRP planner work with different types of demand placed on the inventory resources of the company?
  • What is the purpose of MRP-generated action messages and how does the MRP planner use them when performing MRP output maintenance?
  • What is the purpose of the different types of supply order in MRP and how are these used?
  • How does the MRP planner determine when it is time to release manufacturing and purchase orders?
  • How does the planner identify, negotiate, and resolve operations conflicts.
  • What performance measurements should be used to determine the effectiveness of the MRP in priority management?
By the conclusion of the seminar, the production planners will acquire practical tools to make MRP environments work more smoothly, increase productivity, and reduce operational costs.

About the presenter
Pamela Somers, CPIM, CIRM, CSCP
Saw-Whet Solutions

Somers is principal of Saw-Whet Solutions, a training and consulting firm specializing in progressive supply chain and operations management strategies, including systems implementation, Just-in-Time, lean, total quality management, and sales and operations planning, with a focus on managing change. She has more than 24 years of comprehensive training and practical experience. Somers is recognized by APICS as a master instructor for instructor development programs and review courses for both the APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) exams. 

Somers currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC) and is a former director of the APICS Canadian District. She has served as a member of the APICS Finance Committee, the Chair of Governance Committee, and the APICS Board of Directors.
