I usually use this space to share an interesting news story that has relevance to supply chain and APICS. This week it’s APICS that’s creating the news.
It’s my pleasure to tell you that this week, APICS announced that the boards of directors of both APICS and the Supply Chain Council (SCC) have approved an agreement under which SCC will merge with APICS. The agreement requires an SCC member vote for ratification, which we expect to be overwhelmingly supportive.
While the two organizations have collaborated on a number of occasions, the merger brings together two of the most respected associations in the supply chain industry. Each organization has unique but complementary characteristics that when brought together create the premier global provider of supply chain research, education, and certification programs.
Let me give you an overview of what this merger means.
First, the combination creates the industry-leading portfolio of brands. Recently, SCM World ranked APICS first and SCC second, with each organization holding the most respected brand in the markets it serves. We will leverage the organizations’ top products, including the SCC Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model, the SCOR-P certification, the APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM), and APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP).
Next, this combination ensures investment, improvement, innovation, and continued relevancy of training, standards, certification, and intellectual capital. Together with SCC, APICS will offer the combined constituency greater resources and access to an expanded network of subject matter experts and volunteers. All of this will underscore the combined organization’s reputation as the source of industry standards, benchmarks, and thought leadership.
Lastly, this merger strengthens our global position. Together, SCC and APICS are a powerhouse that will offer greater resources and more opportunities to our members, partners, and customers all over the world. We are poised to quickly realize the benefits of this combination.
Now for some of the details. Following the transaction’s close, we intend to integrate SCC into existing APICS operations. APICS will continue to provide membership, certification, and training for companies and individuals. The APICS Foundation, as the APICS Supply Chain Council, will continue as part of the APICS corporate structure, but as a separate entity. The APICS Supply Chain Council will focus on advancing supply chain and operations management innovation through research, educational programs, and workforce development. It is the research arm of the organization, and SCC products line up nicely with the objectives of the foundation’s activities. I will remain the chief executive officer, and Joseph Francis, SCC’s executive director, will serve as the executive director of the APICS Supply Chain Council. I expect the transaction will be complete in mid-July.
APICS remains committed to advancing supply chain performance, and our merger with SCC strengthens all efforts on this front. I will share more information as it becomes available.
