The Making of Top Performing Supply Chains

The 2013 survey is the ninth such supply chain survey conducted by PwC. From May to July 2012, there were 503 supply chain executives surveyed in a wide range of industries. Forty-four percent of these executives hold senior management positions, while 34 percent hold C-level posts.

As part of the research, each company was assessed by using two criteria: its financial performance (based on its EBIT margins and revenue growth) and its supply chain performance (based on the average annual number of inventory turns and the percentage of occasions on which it delivered on time and in full). Each company was given a score for each performance category. The combination of the two scores created a total performance score -- 35 percent of which represents financial performance and 65 percent of which represents supply chain performance.

These total performance scores were sorted into two groups of companies within each industry sector: leaders (the top 20 percent of the sector population) and laggards (the bottom 20 percent). The two groups were compared with each other to find out which features make the leaders so successful.
