APICS Foundation in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan

Tour of relief operations uncovers humanitarian supply chain in action

While in the Philippines to speak at a global procurement and supply management conference, APICS Foundation Executive Director, Sharon Rice, discussed the issues facing supply chain and operations management professionals in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan and was able to observe humanitarian relief operations underway.

“When a disaster the magnitude of Typhoon Haiyan strikes, crisis recovery is highly dependent on rapidly getting supplies, food, and medicine to where they are direly needed. Supply chain professionals have the expertise to set up logistics and distribution processes and play an important role in these efforts. They are also key to putting businesses back on track and protecting the supply chain well after the immediate impact of the disaster has been resolved," Rice said.

The 2013 PASIAWorld Conference brought supply chain and procurement professionals from around the world to Manila to examine the shift in supply chain management from a tactical, cost-driven entity to a strategic one. Rice's plenary session covered supply chain strategy, its evolution, and its importance to achieving business success in today’s globalized economy. The APICS Foundation is committed to advancing supply chain and operations management and innovation throughout the globe.

The Foundation is the research arm of APICS, the leading professional association for supply chain and operations management.
