George Plossl

Author, speaker, consultant, and philosopher George Plossl, CFPIM, died on April 3, 2004 in Ft. Myers, Florida. A pioneer in the production and inventory control fields, his work has benefited APICS members for more than 30 years.

A graduate of Columbia Univ-ersity and a Navy veteran, Plossl worked with APICS in New England during the early days of the organization. He was instrumental in developing the APICS certification program, serving as the first chair of the Curriculum and Certification Council for five years beginning in 1970. His role on the Council reflected his commitment to APICS and to those it serves, which was to equip people working in manufacturing with the tools and expertise they need to do their jobs better.

As author of the books, Orlicky's Material Requirements Planning and Production and Inventory Control: Principles and Techniques, Plossl established standard reference works in the MRP and production and inventory control arenas. He also was a popular featured speaker at APICS events around the world. "My dad was a practitioner, first and foremost," says Keith Plossl, CFPIM. "He wanted to help other practitioners solve their problems."

The APICS Educational & Research (E&R) Foundation's Plossl Doctoral Dissertation Competition was established to honor George Plossl and his wife and colleague, Marion, in recognition of their longstanding support of the Foundation and its work. The Competition annually honors an outstanding doctoral dissertation on a resource management subject.

APICS—The Performance Advantage extends its condolences to Marion, the family, and the many friends of George Plossl.
