The operations and supply-chain practitioner will learn and understand the core logic and rational behind the food safety component of the Bioterrorism Act and in particular the “Act’s” record keeping (lot trace) requirement. Also, how the other current food industry-wide “top ten” key organizational improvements issues integrate and support the number one goal of food safety and compliance to the Bioterrorism Act. The attendee will learn about the “implied” requirements of the Bioterrorism Act record keeping obligation. Another learning benefit is the understanding of the relationship between role of data accuracy, data quality and data security in regulatory compliance and effective inventory management.
How to leverage, and take advantage of the record keeping obligation of the “Act” and convert it into effective inventory management will be described. The role of Lean Manufacturing techniques and their contribution to data quality and “confusion” elimination will be explored and explained. Finally the role of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and when appropriate Kanban to achieving “WORLD-CLASS INVENTORY MANAGEMENT” will be examined. This APICS Webinar will begin with a brief overview of Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP). You will learn why it is important, and why companies are rapidly embracing this management practice for making unified and timely business resource decisions that positively affect on-time shipments, inventory, and costs. This will be followed by a brief overview of the eight typical S&OP process steps to ensure that the attendees all have the same general vision of S&OP. This presentation will also describes all the key players in an S&OP process, what they are supposed to do, and when they are supposed to do it. Our approach is a departure from normal S&OP discussion in that the emphasis is on who, not on what, when or how. The presentation concludes with a brief outline of the four key steps for implementing S&OP and an overview of a typical nine step project plan.

John E. Boyer Jr., CFPIM, is president of J.E. Boyer Company, Inc., a management education and consulting company. Boyer has 35 years of experience working with companies from a wide variety of industries implementing sales and operations planning, lean manufacturing, enterprise resources planning, MRP II, Just-in-Time, and total quality management to achieve “Class A” and world-class performance. He has implemented S&OP in 37 companies. His career has included positions with Rockwell International, Emerson Electric, Hughes Aircraft, and Weber State University.
Boyer earned a master of business administration from Utah State University and a bachelor of science in industrial engineering from Lehigh University. Boyer served as president and past education vice president of the APICS Salt Lake Chapter.
