APICS Acknowledges Volunteerism at
2004 APICS International Conference and Exposition

San Diego, CA (October 10, 2004) Three members of APICS—The Educational Society for Resource Management of Alexandria, Virginia, received service awards for their volunteer work contributing to APICS, its chapters, and student chapters, at the 2004 APICS International Conference and Exposition here today.

Eric Somers, CPIM, CIRM, of Waterdown, Ontario, is the recipient of the Voluntary Service Award for his service on APICS committees, as a mentor to student members, teacher of APICS educational and certification courses, and instructor trainer. He is currently president of the APICS Hamilton Chapter. Somers served as vice president and COO of the Operations Management Education and Research Institute of Canada (OMERIC), a not-for-profit educational development corporation managed by volunteers from the APICS Canadian chapters. His work with students is exemplified by his involvement in the Region 8 Affiliate Student Chapter Conference annually and serving as a mentor to the student scholars during APICS’ international conferences.

Theresa A. Wells, CPIM, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is the recipient of the Student Chapter Mentor Award for her role as advisor for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire APICS Student Chapter, as president of the APICS Indianhead Chapter, as faculty advisor for student service learning projects, and as liaison with local companies to provide internships for students. She holds resume writing workshops and helps students find jobs in the field of operations management. Wells established the UW-Eau Clair CPIM Enhancement Scholarship for students who have passed the Basics of Supply Chain Management and Master Planning of Resources exams and are working to complete the remaining three exams for their Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) designation. Wells is a senior lecturer in the Management and Marketing Department at UW-Eau Claire.

MaryAnn Groothuis of Kitchener, Ontario, the recipient of the Student Voluntary Service Award, served as Conestoga College APICS Affiliate Student Chapter president increasing membership to 103 students. Attending APICS Ontario Grand Valley Chapter board meetings, she served as secretary and facilitated the professional development meeting run by the student chapter. She attended the 2003 APICS conference as a student scholar and served as a peer tutor at Conestoga College. In addition to her APICS-related volunteer work, Groothuis is involved in the Franklin Graham Ministry Operation Christmas Child program and the Children’s Wish Fund.
