Plant Tours Offer Must-See Opportunities at
2003 APICS International Conference and Exposition
Alexandria, VA (May 1, 2003) Six Las Vegas-area manufacturers are opening their doors to APICS—The Educational Society for Resource Management international conference attendees on Thursday, October 9, 2003.
"Plant tours are always sold out months in advance because APICS international conference attendees want to see firsthand how other manufacturers make and distribute their products," said Karen Alber, CFPIM, 2003 APICS Conference Committee chair.
Bally Gaming International; Ethel M Chocolates; Merillat Industries, LLC; Nevada Color Litho; Shelby American, Inc.; and Sweetheart Cup Company "represent a wide variety of industries and give tour participants the chance to see how these companies have accepted their manufacturing challenges and transformed them into opportunities," said Alber.
Bally Gaming International is the leading manufacturer of slot machines. Starting in 1932 making pinball machines, Bally Gaming introduced Thrillions in 1998, a wide-area linked progressive jackpot system with cartoon icon Betty Boop.
Ethel M Chocolates, started in 1976 by Forrest Mars Sr., is the premium gift chocolate division of Masterfoods USA, a Mars Incorporated company. It is best known for its lemon satin crèmes, almond butter krisps, cream liqueurs, and silk truffles.
In 1946, Orville and Ruth Merillat founded Merillat Industries, LLC, manufacturer of cabinetry for the home in Adrian, Michigan. The assembly plant in Las Vegas opened in 1984 and is a Shingo Prize winner for its lean manufacturing efforts.
A customer-focused company, Nevada Color Litho is a leading commercial sheetfed printer with print runs of 100 copies to more than 100,000.
Shelby American, Inc., is best known for the legendary 1960s sports car, the Cobra. In 1998, Shelby opened its newest manufacturing facility at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Research and Development Center.
The Sweetheart Cup Company, the leading manufacturer of disposable foodservice products in North America, offers single service paper, plastic, and foam items. The Las Vegas plant makes Trophy foam cups, straws, and lids.
In addition to the plant tours, the APICS conference will feature more than 100 educational sessions that will address supply chain management and systems, lean strategies, emerging trends, operations and inventory management, project management, small business, personal and professional development, process improvement, and procurement issues led by outstanding business executives who will offer solutions to resource management challenges. The exposition showcases the leaders in software, systems, services, and information technology for
e-commerce and c-commerce solutions, supply chain management, MRP/ERP, electronic data collection, planning and scheduling, training, CRM, systems integration, human resources, and business consulting.
