APICS Educational and Research Foundation
Announces Fogarty Student Paper
Competition Winners
Alexandria, VA (November 5, 2003) The APICS Educational and Research (E&R) Foundation recently announced the graduate and undergraduate student winners of the 2003 Donald W. Fogarty International Student Paper Competition.
“Several of the papers described well-developed case studies that applied students’ classroom knowledge to real-world company problems. Students who spend the time and effort to write these papers are better prepared for the challenges facing them in the workplace,” said Rhonda Lummus, Ph.D., CFPIM, CIRM, member of the E&R Foundation board of directors.
First-place winners in the graduate category are Thomas Shoemaker and Robert Davis of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Their paper, “Application of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) Thinking Processes in a Municipal Water Utility,” describes the application of TOC processes to the maintenance function of a metropolitan water utility. “The results of their study were presented to top department officials, and the first step of a transition plan to make the suggested changes has been implemented,” said Lummus.
Three students from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, Shawn Feist, Katie Barnes, and Lauren Flowers, are the first place winners in the undergraduate category with their article “Waste Elimination through 5 S Implementation at Precision Machine Works, Inc.,” of Tacoma, Washington. The case study of a lean implementation describes how the application of 5 S manufacturing principles can eliminate many forms of non-value-added waste in a company.
The first place winners receive cash compensation and the opportunity to have their papers published in the peer-reviewed Production and Inventory Management Journal, published by APICS—The Educational Society for Resource Management.
