"Dear APICS" Author Named
APICS Honorary Member
Alexandria, VA (October 28, 2002) George A. Johnson, DBA, CFPIM, of Nebo, North Carolina, recently retired professor from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and author of the monthly "Dear APICS" column in APICS—The Performance Advantage magazine, was named an honorary member of APICS—The Educational Society for Resource Management during the 2002 APICS International Conference and Exposition for his contributions to the society for nearly 25 years.
Johnson served as director of the Center for Production and Inventory Management where he managed the APICS Industrial Inquiry Service in conjunction with RIT for more than 20 years. The service provided APICS members and nonmembers answers to questions and information about current industry practices. He also maintained the APICS Bibliography and was involved in the early development of the Certified in Integrated Resource Management (CIRM) certification program.
A professor of operations management, Johnson taught courses in manufacturing strategy and the management of manufacturing resources and was faculty coordinator in the Manufacturing Management and Leadership program. Johnson's primary interests are in the areas of system behavior and human performance, particularly in the processes of materials management and supply chain management. He is published in the Journal of Operations Management, Academy of Management Review, Decision Sciences, and Organizational Behavior and Human Performance.
Johnson participated in RIT's Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies (CIMS) and served as a team leader for joint industry/CIMS improvement projects and participated in research projects regarding world-class manufacturing and customer/supplier relationships. Before joining RIT, Johnson was employed by Eastman Kodak, was a supply and finance officer in the U.S. Air Force, and taught for 12 years at the University of Connecticut.
Johnson holds a BS degree from the University of Rochester and earned his MBA and DBA in production management from Indiana University.
